Obesity is a Disease! When to Worry and How to Take Natural Action
Obesity is a condition that has been growing worldwide and, contrary to what many people think, it is not just an aesthetic issue. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies obesity as a chronic disease — that is, a long-term condition that requires care and can lead to serious complications if left untreated.
What is Obesity?
Obesity occurs when there is an excessive accumulation of body fat, usually caused by an imbalance between calorie intake and expenditure. This condition can be related to several factors, such as an unbalanced diet, a sedentary lifestyle, genetic predisposition and even emotional issues.
When Does Obesity Become Dangerous?
Not all weight gain automatically means a health risk; sometimes it is a gain in muscle mass, which greatly improves a person's physical condition. Obesity appears and stops being just a visual nuisance when it starts to compromise the functioning of the body. That is where the danger lies.
If you feel constantly tired, have joint pain, sleep disorders, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or are pre-diabetic, these may be warning signs. If you have these symptoms, it is recommended that you seek medical attention.
Degrees of Obesity: Understand Each Level
Obesity is classified based on the BMI (Body Mass Index), which is the calculation between weight and height. To calculate the BMI, simply take your weight (W) and divide it by your height (H) squared, according to the equation: W/H² = BMI See the degrees of obesity below:
Overweight (BMI between 25 and 29.9): It is not yet obesity, but it does indicate a risk. This is the ideal time to change your habits.
Grade 1 Obesity (BMI between 30 and 34.9): Considered mild obesity. It can be reversed with dietary reeducation and physical activity.
Grade 2 Obesity (BMI between 35 and 39.9): Moderate level. Requires medical monitoring, as the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases is high.
Grade 3 or morbid obesity (BMI over 40): High health risk. Multidisciplinary treatment and, in some cases, bariatric surgery may be necessary.
Alarming Data on Obesity in the World
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 1 billion people in the world live with obesity. Of these, 650 million are adults, 340 million are adolescents and 39 million are children. The projection is even more worrying: by 2035, more than half of the world's population could be overweight if nothing is done.
